What should I do if my property receives a warning or ticket?

Cities may send warnings or tickets at your property if there's a violation of city code. These are typically sent in the mail to the property owner or registered agent.

Property owners or tenants (if the property is occupied) are responsible for the area in front of the home to the middle of the street and to the middle of the alley.

Common reasons for violations include:

  • Tall grass and weeds in front of, behind, and in the alley of a house (in most cities, grass cannot be more than 8")
  • Obstructed alleys - they should be drivable
  • Animal feces
  • Debris and solid waste

Call the relevant Public Works department as soon as possible if you receive a warning. They often work with owners and tenants about a warning. Otherwise, it will be important to take care of the issue immediately before receiving a fine.
